A Weekend Without a To-Do List

For a long time, I thought an empty calendar meant I wasn't doing enough.

For more than twenty years, my weeks were planned long before they began.

Work meetings.

School events.

Family commitments.

Even our holidays were booked months in advance, carefully arranged around school terms and annual leave. Life always had somewhere to be.

When I left my full-time job, I expected to enjoy the freedom.

Instead, I felt strangely uncomfortable.

A day without plans felt unfinished.

Almost irresponsible.

Without realising it, I had spent years measuring a good day by how full it looked on a calendar.

I tried to recreate that structure.

I opened Notion.

Built schedules.

Filled every hour. It felt familiar. Safe, even.

But after a while, I realised I wasn't creating rhythm. I was recreating habit.

These days, my weekdays are often busier than they were before.

Running my own business means there is always another idea to explore, another book to read, another conversation worth having.

Ironically, I no longer have work as an excuse to postpone the things I've always wanted to learn.

So I protect my weekends differently.

There is no alarm.

I call my family in Korea.

I take my dogs for a long morning walk.

Sometimes I wake the children with the smell of fresh bread or cookies baking in the oven.

Nothing remarkable.

Yet these are the moments I remember most.

I've learned that rest isn't the absence of purpose.

It's making space for it.

By Sunday evening, I don't feel like I've fallen behind.

I simply feel ready to begin again.
